Mexican Independence Day 2017

I attended “El Grito” event hosted by Tierra de los Artesanos last week and I had the most amazing time! I shopped and ate from local vendors, and saw beautiful bailes folkloricos throughout the night. I’m sharing some of the highlights of the event and some of my favorite goods made by local artisans.

Mexican Independence Day is September 16th, but traditionally begins the evening of the 15th. The sitting President usually commemorates the day by ringing a bell at the National Palace, sharing their own Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores. This day commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French forces of Napoleon; today we celebrate with flags, food, flowers, dancing, music, and fireworks. ¡Viva Mexico!

  1. This looks like it was tons of fun! Unfortunately my little ones were sick this year and for the first time we didn’t go out to celebrate el grito. Maybe next year.
